Special Edition/特別篇-Scraping Therapy (Gua Sha 刮痧)

Welcome to our special edition!

Today, we'll be sharing about Scraping Therapy (Gua Sha)

Gua Sha is a technique that requires special tools (ie. ceramic spoon, coin, gua sha stones, etc) to rub against the skin to achieve stimulation of the immune system and promote Qi and Blood circulation.

Who’s not suitable for Gua Sha?

  • Physical weakness and serious illness
  • With coagulopathy, anemia
  • Various skin diseases
  • Fasting (empty stomach) or just after a full meal, after drinking
  • Pregnant women or women who are menstruating

How to perform the technique:

Hold the tool at a 30~60 degree angle to the skin and move downwards (one direction) from top to bottom, in to out. Use consistent strength and to the extent that you can take (best to start light, especially on your first try). It is good to apply lotion or massage oil before starting gua sha to protect the skin.

How long and how often can I do gua sha?

It is best not to do more than 10 minutes in one area (based on when you see the skin appearing to be slightly red or reddish-purple). Keep in mind that not everyone’s skin will appear red spots, therefore there’s no need to expect its appearance every time. Performing Gua Sha once a week is enough.

Note: After gua sha, rest a bit and drink a cup of warm water. Make sure to stay warm and cover up the area that had the gua sha. Wait at least 1~2 hours before taking a shower.
