Today we welcome the starting of the next solar term - Grain of Ear (Mang Zhong). We are now into the third solar term of Summer which is the period when the Yang energy is at its prime. Though the temperature is not at its hottest peak, it is on the rise along with the humidity. The stuffy feeling can make one more easily irritated, fatigued, have decreased appetite, etc. Therefore it is important to stay hydrated and keep our inner fire steady.
How to Maintain -- Taking care of the Heart Meridian & Purging Heart Fire
It is stated in Huang Di Nei Jing: “the heart commands all of the organs and viscera, houses the spirit, and controls the emotions”. Besides the physical heart itself (in which it controls the circulation and distribution of blood), it also represents the mind (thoughts and emotions). The heart correlates with the Fire element and summer is the perfect time to charge the heart with the Yang energy. On the other hand, if the fire gets out of hand (which can be fanned by the outer environment of heat), it can cause damage to the body, which may require some purging.

Diet
During the period of Grain of Ear (Mang Zhong), continue to eat light. Eat foods that are replenishing, food that can remove heat and encourage the production and replenishing of fluids used due to high heat. These foods include but are not limited to chrysanthemum, bamboo shoot, cucumber, sponge gourd, winter melon, bitter melon, watermelon, soybean, mung bean, barley, etc. It is also good to eat some sour foods such as plum and hawthorn. According to TCM, sour properties have the ability to astringe, which can remove dampness from the body as well as replenish the Yin fluids.
Again, we should continue to eat foods that are easy to digest and try to avoid eating oil, greasy, or salty foods that may be a burden to the stomach.
For herbal tea, you can mix and match dried bitter melon, chrysanthemum, cassia, goji berry, ginseng, dried hawthorn, dried plum, mint, etc.
For example:
- goji berry + chrysanthemum can brighten eyes (vision) and lower inner fire
- bitter melon tea can help lower blood pressure
- dried hawthorn + dried plum can help with digestion
Overall, during Grain of Ear (Mang Zhong), keep yourself hydrated. When enjoying water or any of the herbal teas mentioned above, it is best to drink them warm or at room temperature. As mentioned in the last post, try to keep cold beverages at a minimum and to drink slowly. Do not chug it down too quickly for it’ll cause a rapid vasoconstriction and lead to pain on both sides of your head, aka brain freeze.
**Simple Cooking - 5 Grain Rice Milk **
Ingredients:
Five-grain rice 90 grams (1/2 cup)
Water 1000ml
Rock candy
Directions:
- Rinse the five-grain rice and soak in water for about 2 hours (if you want to drink other flavors of rice milk, you can replace with other kinds of rice).
- Use a blender to mix the soaked five-grain rice with 400ml of water evenly. If you like a more smooth taste, you can mix for a longer time so that the five-grain rice is fully broken down and grinned.
- Bring 600ml of water to a boil, turn to medium heat, add the beaten rice water and continue to boil
- Keep stirring until the rice milk thickens, then turn off the heat and let cool
- Add appropriate amount of rock sugar to taste according to personal preference (if you want to drink it sugar free that's totally fine).
- After cooling, it can be bottled and stored in the refrigerator. It is best to finish drinking within a month.
Lifestyle
Maintain moderate amounts of exercise and try to avoid being overly exposed under direct sunlight for long periods of time. After a workout, it is best to cool down and wipe down any sweat before taking a shower. It is good to take a nap during the day (15~30min) to help restore energy and to not feel fatigued in the afternoon. Even though the high temperatures may make you feel uncomfortable, try to calm the heart. Do some breathing exercises or meditation so you can have a joyful heart and positive attitude throughout the day.

Notes:
I purchase the majority of my essential oils from doTERRA and I’ve also been trying my own blends that can be as effective. For the Heart Meridian, I find the Passion and Peace blend to work quite well. Therefore, if you would like to save the trouble of mixing your own blend, or finding it hard to obtain some of the single oils, then you’re more than welcome to give Passion a try. There's also the Passion Touch where it’s already mixed with base oil and in a roller! Feel free to check out the site: doTERRA
