Hello again! Hope everyone had a nice Thanksgiving!
As we move into the month of December, we have welcomed the first solar term of the month - Greater Snow. In many areas, the amount of snow has increased and the temperature continues to drop. The winter season is all about nourishing and toning the body. By doing so, it strengthens the body’s immune system and metabolism; the energy transformed from nutrients taken is then stored in the body to help the Yang energy rise, keeping the body warm.
How to Maintain -- Taking care of the Reproductive Organs
Winter time is all about storing essence and restoring the body. By doing so, the Yang energy can be obtained, which can allow the body to be stronger when Spring comes along to start a new cycle of growth and renewal.
As mentioned in the “Beginning of Winter (Li Dong)” post, the Winter season correlates with the Kidneys in TCM (traditional chinese medicine) and the Kidneys are responsible for storing essence, which is the foundation of human life. Therefore, continue to massage the Kidney Meridian through this season. Massaging the abdomen and lower back, as well as the reflective area of the reproductive organs on the feet are recommended to add into your daily routine as well.
Keeping the body warm and not overworking is something to keep in mind, to allow the body to have good circulation for functioning and properly store all the essence obtained.
Diet
During the Winter season, it’s good to eat more soup and porridge type foods because it’s not only easier for digestion, but also warms the body to provide energy.
Please keep in mind that though we recommend nourishing the body during this season, in the modern days, the majority of the population are well-nourished, therefore try not to over do it which will burden the body.
It’s good to choose good quality proteins, oils and warm property foods. Also, to pick seasonally ingredients, eat whole foods, and have a well balanced intake of proteins, fruits and vegetables.
Recommend to avoid/eat minimally cold foods and those that are overly spicy or salty and oily.
**Simple Cooking - Herbal Bone Broth**
Ingredients:
- 600 g pork ribs
- *for vegetarians, can substitute with a variety of mushrooms
- 1 piece rehmannia
- 1 piece angelica
- 6 pieces chuan xiong (ligusticum striatum)
- 5 grams gui zhi (ramulus cinnamomi cassiae)
- 10 grams goji berry
- 3~5 dried jujube (red dates)
- a pinch of salt
- a pinch of white pepper
- a few slices of ginger
Directions:
- Cut the pork ribs into sections (or you can buy those that are already in chunks) and blanch them in hot water to get rid of impurities. Then rinse them with water and set aside for later use.
- Rinse all the herbs with water and then add into a water filled pot to soak for 15 minutes. Then add the pork ribs into the pot.
- Add water to submerge all ingredients and cook with medium heat until boil. Then turn to low heat and cook for 30 minutes.
- Add some salt and white pepper for taste after turning off the heat
Lifestyle
Not wanting to leave your warm bed on cold winter mornings? Now there’s a reason to stay a little bit longer! It’s good to move the body a bit and stretch for a few minutes to allow the body to warm up before getting out of bed. This can also reduce the discomfort caused by the temperature difference as well as reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases such as stroke.
If the Kidney Meridian is blocked in any way, problems in the urinary system and the reproductive system are likely to occur. If you have symptoms of discomfort, it is recommended to go for a check up with your family doctor first. With diseases being ruled out or recognized, you can then make adjustments in your diet and lifestyle. You may also consult with a Licensed Acupuncturist for herbal formulas and acupuncture treatments.
